OCD Treatment

What is OCD?

People think of washing hands when they hear about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
The image most people think of when they hear about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is isolating, exhausting, and a debilitating mental health disorder. While most people think that OCD just looks like excessive hand washing, it often is much more complicated than this, consisting of almost daily obsessions over which we have no control. These obsessions cause extreme levels of anxiety, for which we develop behaviors, or compulsions, to cope. OCD can also consist of intrusive thoughts and images which can be highly disturbing and upsetting.

Treatment Approach

While Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can feel inescapable, the good news is that you can experience relief from a structured treatment approach. My treatment approach to OCD includes a combination of mindfulness techniques and exposure therapy. Mindfulness techniques can help you focus on the present and away from your obsessions and compulsions. Exposure therapy can help you cope with distress or discomfort in a way that allows you to go about your daily life. Our overall treatment goal is to eliminate the distress caused by your obsessions as well as eliminate the need for compulsive, time consuming behaviors.
